"Through my experiments, I have come to some important conclusions about matter and the nature of atoms. Matter is made up of atoms, which are indivisible and indestructible. Every atom of a given element is identical, while atoms of different elements have distinct masses and properties. These atoms combine in simple, whole-number ratios to form compounds, and importantly, atoms are never created or destroyed in chemical reactions—only rearranged."

"I realized that if Rutherford’s model were right, atoms would be unstable and matter would fall apart, but that doesn’t happen. So, I proposed that electrons orbit in specific, quantized levels around the nucleus. The atom is mostly empty space, with mass in the nucleus. It’s impossible to know exactly where an electron is, only where it might be."

"Through my experiments, where I fired positive charges at gold atoms, I made a surprising discovery. Some of the charges passed right through the atom, while others bounced back. If Thomson’s 'plum pudding' model was correct, this shouldn’t have happened. So, I proposed a new model: the atom is mostly empty space, with all the positive charge concentrated in a tiny central nucleus. The electrons orbit around this nucleus, much like planets orbit the sun. This is what we call the 'planetary model' of the atom."
