It was Jonas' first day of training. He felt uneasy and he had no idea what to expect after reading the rules he must follow. He hopped on his bike and rode to the house of the old, where he had been many times before,except he arrived at the door of the annex instead, which was attached to the house.

As he walked in he saw a reception desk with a woman he had never seen before sitting behind it. She pressed a button and spoke out loud, but not to him. She then told him to enter the door to the left, which was locked. This worried Jonas because no other door in the entire community locked, but this one did. He entered and was greeted by an older man.

As he introduced himself to the old man, the man tells him to call him The giver . He explains that they have different rules with this job, that they have little time, but that Jonas an ask any question he wants at any time. He also explains that there is no time for apologies, which is one of the things that he struggled with most. The giver explained that he will transit memories to Jonas, all of the ones in the world, and reminds him of the pain he will face, but Jonas doesn't understand. The giver tells him to lay down so he can see what he is talking about.
