On October 16, 1859, John Brown led a raid in Harpers Ferry, killing seven people and injuring ten. He tried to arm slaves with weapons from arsenal, but only a few local slaves joined his revolt.

I, John Brown, had commit nothing but an eye for an eye and to free the enslaved. If my blood is equivalent to the blood of millions in this enslaved country whose rights are disregarded by wicked, cruel, and unjust enactments, so let it be done.
In 36 hours, General Robert E. Lee and US Marines, militia men, and farmers captured or killed Brown's men who were too late to flee. While John Brown was on trial for murder, treason, and attempt for slave uprise, justified his actions because he stated that they were based off of Christian principles and his plan was to free a few enslaved without shedding blood.

On December 2, 1859, John Brown was executed by hanging. His last words were "Crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood" meaning that violence will only solve the problem of slavery. This was his prediction of the Civil War between the North and South.
