- In the world of Wakefield everyone is born with special eyes. These eyes are not their own, instead they are goggles over their normal eyes, similar to what we call virtual reality goggles. The people living in Wakefield have only seen what the world looks like through these goggles, they have never been exposed to the real world.
- Each citizen of Wakefield is surgically given a pair of these goggles when they are born. As they grow up they are taught the importance of wearing these goggles and how to charge and maintain them. They are also instructed to never attempt to take them off. The punishments for taking these goggles off, most times involve death. Every person in Wakefield is responsible for making sure that every citizen abides by this law. It is your responsibility to report any suspicions or unlawful behaviors to the government.
- Don't trust anyone!
- The world of Wakefield was a place of happiness and opportunity. Everyone who lived there enjoyed their lives, except for one, Elliott Pierce. Elliot grew up living in Wakefield; he had never been outside of the walls that surrounded Wakefield.
- His parents taught him knowledge and kindness. He was very close to his family, they called themselves the three musketeers. Everyday, Elliot would come home from school and his mother would be in the kitchen baking an after school snack. Most days it was some sort of cookie or muffin but occasionally he would get a danish or chocolate filled pastry.
- One day when Elliot got home he could not find his Mom. Instead he found a relatively warm cookie next to a pair of goggles that said “don’t trust anyone, they are always watching”.Elliot picked up the goggles and ran. He ran out of the house and far away into the forest or what he thought was the forest.
- In the forest he decided to do the unforgettable. He used a knife that he had taken from his home to cut the stitches that attached the goggles to his face. When he removed the goggles he was stunned to see that he was not in a forest. Instead he was in the middle of a desert with no signs of life. The ground was red as if he were standing on a previous battleground. Elliot, terrified of what he just saw, immediately put the goggles back on and began to see a beautiful forest again.
