Prince: Hey mom, I wanted to get to know more about your migration from Ivory Coast, to the United States, and I wanted to hear more about your journey.
Горка: 2
Alright so my first question would be, why did you choose to migrate?
Горка: 3
Mom: I would say basically, it was curiosity. We wanted to see what the American dream was about. That's why we came here.
Горка: 4
Prince: Do you think you are living the American dream?
Горка: 5
Mom: I would say yes! I love my life, worked hard to get to where we are, and yes I do.
Горка: 6
Prince: All right so when did you migrate? Was there anything going on around the world while you are migrating?
Горка: 7
Mom: There's always something going on around the world when I migrated it was around 9/11. so yes there was a lot of things going on around the world.
Горка: 8
Prince: How did you prepare for the migration and what did you bring and take?Mom: I would say that you are never really prepared because, you can only imagine what you are going to get. When you get there is when you really start living the realities on the field.
Горка: 10
Prince: Would you say you were well prepared?Mom: I would say kind of, because you're never really prepared 100% because you never know what you're gonna face.
Горка: 11
Prince: Did you want to leave Ivor y Coast or go to the United States?Mom: I think its both,, you want to leave where you are and get to where you are going.
Горка: 12
Mom: So first we went to France for a few years for me to finish school, and then we decided t come to America for the American dream, as I said earlier.
Горка: 13
Prince: Did you go directly to the U.S., or did you make any stops to stay in a different country for a little while? and why?Mom: I went from Ivory Coast to France and from France to America. I went to France to finish schools and get my doctorate.
Горка: 14
Prince: Was there any family or any of my ancestors that did not approve of you leaving?
Горка: 16
Prince: So how long did the whole migration process take, like how much time did you stay in each country? Mom: Spent about 6 years in Paris, so I would say around 7 years.
Горка: 17
Prince: So who in the family actually migrated with you?
Горка: 18
Mom: My son!Prince: Did you meet Dad before or after you migrated?Mom: BeforePrince: Did you migrate with him?Mom: Yes
Горка: 19
Prince: So, what was your first job when you got here to the United States?
Горка: 20
Mom: I was a cashier for McDonalds. I'm not advertising for McDonalds, but yeah that's what I did.
Горка: 21
The other jobs were like babysitting,
Горка: 22
Bonjour!
And tutoring French.
Горка: 23
Prince: Is there anyone who helped you get on your feet when you first arrived? Like a family member or stranger?Mom: Absolutely! There is no way you can make it on your own, coming to a totally new environment. A lot of people helped me that I can't even remember. I wish I could thank them personally.
Горка: 24
Prince: How did you manage to get your doctorate while migrating? Did you already have one, or did you get one after migrating
Горка: 25
I finished my college in France, before I came to America.
Горка: 26
Prince: In France, where did you stay? Were you in a dorm?Mom: No, we had an apartment.
Горка: 27
Prince: When and why did you choose to settle down in Georgia specifically?
Горка: 28
Mom: I knew people here, which made it easier for me to be insertedPrince: Was there a lot of family?Mom: Mostly Friends, that were already here.
Горка: 29
Prince: How was America different from your home country?Mom: Everything was different, especially, the size. Everything is super sized, over sized,
Горка: 30
Mom: From refrigerators to microwaves
Горка: 31
Mom: to the food portions, to the people,
Горка: 32
Mom: the cars, the roads, everything is bigger and faster.
Горка: 33
Prince: Would you say that is a pro or a con?Mom: There are pros and cons, we don't need to have everything big.
Горка: 34
Prince: When you first got here was there a big language barrier?
Горка: 35
Mom: I wasn't good in English but I had some bases. As said before, when we were getting ready to move, we started polish our English.
Where can find near coffee?
What?
Горка: 36
Prince: Do you still do home country traditions?
Горка: 37
Mom: Yeah! I still do traditions such as naming ceremonies, Thanksgiving masses, Etc.
Горка: 38
Prince: What has been your biggest accomplishment ever since migration?
Горка: 39
Mom: creating a family that can both speak English and French fluently. It was a struggle, but we succeeded.
Горка: 40
Prince: How do you think you have changed as a person as a result of migration?
Горка: 41
--------------------
I don't think I've changed, I think I've learned a lot from my experiences, and have matured. I have learned to appreciate the people around me more than anything else.
Горка: 42
Prince: How do you think life would be if you never migrated?Mom: I think I would still be successful, because no matter where I am, I will always try and strive to do the best I can, to use all the potential, accomplish what I need to accomplish, and I think I would still have a very good life.
Горка: 43
Prince: For my last question, what other challenges or encounters did you face during the whole migration?Mom: Missing my family, friends, getting out of my element, challenging myself, it wasn't easy, but it is very rewarding.
Горка: 45
Prince: Well, I am very proud, and thank you for letting me know more about your migration journey.
