Lincoln began working towards the presidency following his Senate defeat, and used simple and concise logic in his speeches opposed to most politician's wordy long-winded ways.
Many Southerners threaten secession if Lincoln is to be elected.

Almost all northern states were against slavery and southern states for slavery at this point.
Northern Republicans Throw Parades in Support of Lincoln
Douglas had a mostly neutral stance on slavery, and was upset when in most of his speeches people asked what he'd do if Lincoln won. At the end of his campaign he was sure Lincoln would win. Believing this, and worried about the US breaking apart he urged people not to secede if Lincoln won.

These warnings worried many Northern Republicans as they did not know what would happen if the nation were to be split in two
These parades were called Wide Awake, and took place at night in the torchlight.
Despite not winning the popular vote, Lincoln won all Northern states. He was not even on the ballot in Southern states, where Breckenridge carried many votes. SIx weeks after his presidency began, South Carolina seceded.
