  • Douglas had a mostly neutral stance on slavery, and was upset when in most of his speeches people asked what he'd do if Lincoln won. At the end of his campaign he was sure Lincoln would win. Believing this, and worried about the US breaking apart he urged people not to secede if Lincoln won.

  • Despite not winning the popular vote, Lincoln won all Northern states. He was not even on the ballot in Southern states, where Breckenridge carried many votes. SIx weeks after his presidency began, South Carolina seceded.
