After seeing who she thought to be Stella, Jude's focus on her comes to light. "Stella drifted through her dreams... never her mother, as if ,even asleep, she could tell the difference" (Bennet 235). Jude's constant fixation on Stella is her main focus. She slightly loses sight in the important things in her own life trying to figure out Stella's past.

When Stella and Kennedy meet at the restaurant Stella questions Kennedy; "Why can't you be yourself ...Maybe I don't know who that is, her daughter shot back"(Bennet 253). Their interaction is ironic because they are dealing with the same internal conflict. Maybe Kennedy feels as though she does not know who she really is because she has no knowledge of her family history.

When Kennedy addresses Stella after finally giving some detail about her past Stella comes to a realization about her self. "She'd lived a life split between two women --- each real, each a lie" (Bennet 292). Stella holding on to secrets creates tension between her and the people she cares about. Her secretive lifestyle also inclined her to believe that there was no single truth to her story and life because of the multiple layers she created.
