These kids are prime examples of what young children who grow up in war go through: a loss of innocence and exposure to explicit experiences.
Satrapi depicts this in her illustrations, as a background event in one of the very first scenes. This allows for the understanding that young children who grow up seeing war first-hand unfortunately normalize these events.

Not just this, but many kids are affected mentally by these scenes in many ways. Young children are very vulnerable due to their young age, causing them to be mentally scarred from what they see.
This is depicted in Persepolis through characterization, as the reader sees Satrapi suffering after her neighbor dies. Many kids experience bedwetting, nightmares, and more after experiencing something traumatic like this.

Children growing up in war is something very common happening all over the world, including Ukraine, Palestine, Democratic of Republic of Congo, and even a few more countries! This is an experience so many kids are FORCED to go through, including children like Satrapi. War shapes a child's identity, trauma, and truth, in many negative ways.
