The German armies invade Denmark, and Annemarie's dark-haired, Jewish friend, Ellen, is now unsafe
So Annemarie, her mother, Kirsti (her younger sister), and Ellen flee and seek refuge at Annemarie's Uncle Henrik's house far away by the coast of Denmark
And while the presence of these soldiers here is certainly less than in Annemarie's hometown, they still jeopardize Ellen's safety.
The best, but possibly most dangerous option, is to send Ellen and another group of Jews across the sea to Sweden, a country free from Germany's rule.
The handkerchief contains a substance which will hinder German search dogs' abilities to track their scent
Annemarie succeeds in her pursuits, and Ellen and the rest of the group of Jews are safely sent to freedom in Sweden.
Finally, in an epilogue, Annemarie and Ellen are reunited once more after years of war, and life in Denmark will soon be back to normal.
But on the way to the boat, a white packet containing a tampered-with handkerchief that will allow to the group to safely escape is misplaced, and Annemarie must now conceal and bring the packet to the boat before it is too late
