  • Before we begin, please tell us a little about where you're from and how you grow.
  • I am a Dragon's Mouth orchid and I live in much of the eastern US. I live in Bogs, Fens, Meadows, or Swamps. I like to grow in acidic, boggy conditions the best and I grow well in beds of sphagnum moss.
  • Scientists and researchers study thousands of orchids with different appearances and anatomies. Please explain how your appearance and anatomy makes you unique from all other orchids.
  • In terms of anatomy, my labellum makes up a majority of it. My labellum gives off a pinkish red or white color. It also has an undivided or simple shape and is not pouch-like.
  • First off, I can be anywhere from 2-40 cm tall. When I bloom in the summer, I produce a bright pink flower with a white/pink labellum that has magenta spots and a yellow center. After I flower, I produce a grass-like leaf. This leaf is arranged at the base of the stem.
  • Each orchid, flower, or plant for that matter must pollinate in some way to survive.
  • Please inform me on how you specifically pollinate and how the entire pollination process works.
  • I also think its important to mention that my species of orchid offer little to no nectar for pollinators. However, we survive because inexperienced bees don't know we have no nectar so they end up pollinating us before they find out.
  • Well, my labellum's lips have ultraviolet absorbing bristles that attract different insects such as bees. After they land on the flower in search for nectar, they start backing out and this is where the stigma gets triggered to release pollen from the pollen case. This allows the pollen to get stuck to the bee.
  • Many orchids these days are starting to go extinct, endangered, or threatened in Maryland. As for your type of orchid, what is your status like?
  • In Maryland, my current status is unknown. However, my ranking in Maryland is "possibly extirpated". This means that my species of orchids has not been seen for many years and will have a low chance of rediscovery. I assume you could say that we are threatened for extinction.
  • Lastly, there are thousands of orchids in world. What makes you important enough to protect out of all other orchids?
  • Myself along with my species are dying at a rapid rate due to human development. We may even be extinct in Maryland and that is why we are important to protect. We are one of nature's many wonders and our beauty makes us something worth protecting, at least in my opinion.
