Monarchs held military, legislative andjudicial power. However, they had to swearan oath to respect the fueros of eachterritory.
The Crown of Aragon consisted of three territories (Aragón, Catalonia and Valencia). Each had its own laws and institutions, but they had the same monarch.
Each territory was led by a lieutenant, who represented the king.
Each territory had its own Cortes, which voted on laws and taxes. But first, the king had to listen and respond to the petitions and complaints of the bourgeois representatives.

There were Mediterranean crops (cereals, vines and olives), and fruit and vegetables around the Ebro and in Valencia.
Commercial and artisan activities in cities such as Barcelona, Valencia and Palma grew thanks to maritime trade with Mediterranean ports. Ships were loaded up with fabrics, oil and iron tools and weapons. They brought back spices, silk, sugar and wheat.
However, Mediterranean trade grew between 1250 and 1350 and led to economic prosperity.The Crown of Aragón organised military conquests to dominate the Mediterranean and expand its trade routes.
