Then, a Samaritan, a man seen as an enemy by others, came along and helped the man, taking him to an inn and dressing his wounds.
Suddenly, a Levite and a Jewish priest came walking along the trail. The man thought he was saved, but both passed without a word...
A man was walking to Jericho, attacked by thieves, stripped of his possession, and beaten, left in a ditch.

What does this parable mean? This parable explores what it means to help others and make choices based on goodness, rather than fear of social judgement. For example, the Samaritan, seen at the time as a sort of enemy to the man and his nation, chooses to help the beaten man, recognising a human need rather than societal animosity. This is mirrored by the character of the Jewish priest, who neglects the man, seemingly in an act of selfishness. However, further studies of the era this parable is from reveals that helping the man would have left the priest in a position of social ridicule, perhaps limiting the amount of people he was able to help as a priest.
