  • Choral Dialogue
  • Oedipus speaks to the town, trying but failing to get a confession from the king's killer. Creon suggests calling upon Tiresias for help, the town's blind man who supposedly sees all. Tiresias comes but initially refuses to reveal the killer's identity. However, after Oedipus' many threats, he finally reveals that it was actually Oedipus who killed the king. Oedipus adamantly refuses to believe that it could have been him and instead accuses Creon, who he claimed to be a conspirator.
  • I need to know more about the circumstances surrounding King Laius' death. I'm starting to think Tiresias could be right about me being the killer. I'd like to talk to Laius' former servant, the one who witnessed the murder, so I can get some answers.
  • I think it's impossible that you're the killer, but I'll still find the servant so you can talk to him.
  • The chorus imagines the fate of the man who brought the plagues upon Thebes while beginning to consider the unthinkable possibility that Tiresias was right and Oedipus really is the man who killed the king and caused Thebes' problems.

  • Creon defends himself from Oedipus’ accusation and is countered by Oedipus, who wants Creon dead because of his own persistent belief that Creon is plotting against him. Jocasta, Creon’s sister and Oedipus' wife, tries but fails to convince Oedipus to believe in Creon's innocence.
  • I don't care. I'm positive he's conspiring against me, and for that I want him dead!
  • The chorus agrees with Jocasta regarding Creon's innocence, and together they try to convince Oedipus that Creon is and has been a trustworthy friend. Later, Oedipus asks Jocasta questions about the circumstances of Laius’ death as he starts to believe Tiresias. He tells her about the prophecy and that he believes he killed Laius. He asks her to bring back Laius’ former servant, the only living witness of the murder, so he can ask him about it. Jocasta partially convinces Oedipus that he is innocent, but Oedipus still wants to talk to the herdsman to fully convince himself.
