After France and Great Britain go to war, America decides to stay out of it. But, the president goes behind France's back and makes a deal with Great Britain, causing the French to capture over 300+ american ships that trade with Brittain.

During this, president Adams decides to send three representatives to France to negotiate peace. While on the way, they were stopped by three French spies known as X, Y, and Z. They said that that unless America paid 250k as a bribe, and 10+ million dollars as a loan they could negotiate. We rejected and started stealing their ships, the phrase "millions for defense, but not one cent for tribue" was widely spread

Before France surrendered, we captured 80+ of their war ships. This pushed France to give up, and a peace treaty was made between them. This whole event would be called the XYZ affair.
