- Roger, once he tells the other savage it was him, is allowed to pass. The savage shows him a lever built to send a boulder down the neck of land to ambush any intruders. Roger admires.
- The savage tells Roger that Jack had his tribe tie up a boy named Wilfred, and is planning to beat him, but for no clear reason.
- Roger joins the rest of Jack's tribe. Jack says that tomorrow the boys will be hunting, but some of them will have to remain guard to make sure that Ralph's tribe - and the beast - don't come back. Jack is angered and responds harshly when a boy questions how the beast would be alive.
- Jack also decides that he, Roger, and Maurice will go and raid Ralph's camp for fire at night.
- The story switches back to Ralph's tribe. While collecting firewood, Sam and Eric's faith are lingering, and Ralph starts to forget the purpose of the fire himself. They decide to let the fire go out for one night. They headed back to their shelters.
- In the middle of the night, Piggy warns Ralph that they have to leave the island soon, or they'll all go "barmy." While Piggy and Ralph are talking, Jack, Roger, and Maurice arrives and starts raiding Ralph's camp! Ralph and the biguns of his tribe try to fight the other tribe off.
