Alykiah Gromer Fever 1793

Fever 1793 is a book about a girl who survives yellow fever and her struggles in 1793. My favorite scene is when the robbers come into the coffeehouse, which leads to the death of her grandfather—in the beginning Grandfather and Mattie leave the coffeehouse trying to free themselves from getting the fever from Mother. Mattie and grandmother made it back to the coffeehouse to find it destroyed. Mattie and grandmother ended up staying, leading to them getting robbed again. Two robbers broke into the coffeehouse. While they were sleeping, Mattie ended up getting caught by robbers. Grandpa came to him getting attacked by a sword. The robbers escaped while Mattie walked to Grandpa’s side until he passed away. This scene is important because it is the first time when Mattie is truly alone and has to step up and be an adult to survive.
