- Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa,Italy.He later moved to Lisbon and became a trader.Columbus learned how to make maps and navigate a ship. Christopher and his brother Bartholomew knew that there were great riches in India,but traveling on the Silk Road was dangerous. Columbus believed that there was a way to reach Asia by sailing east on the Atlantic Ocean.
- Columbus spent many years trying to convince a ruler or monarch to fund his expedition.At last,King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella agreed to fund his expedition.

- Columbus set sail on his three ships,the NIna,the Pinta,and the Santa Maria. on August 3,1492. His voyage was long and difficult.At one point,his men wanted him to turn back but Columbus said that if they hadn't found land within a few days,they would turn back. On October 12 1492,land was spotted.It was an island in the Bahamas,which would later be named San Salvador by Columbus.

- Columbus met natives in the islands he arrived in.He called the natives,Indians because he believed he had reached the east Indies.Columbus traveled to more nearby islands and brought back goods such as turkeys,pineapples,and even some natives he captured. The King of Spain was pleased enough to fund more expeditions.
- Columbus then made three more voyages to the Americas.He explored the mainland where he found more natives.He began to trade with Natives which would soon start the Columbia Exchange,a process where European ships would sail to the New World,trade goods and bring the recieved goods back to Europe.
- Later on,Columbus and other Europeans began to settle in the Americas.Soon the process of trade would turn into Europeans traveling to the new world.This meant that colonization would begin. Columbus governed a settlement until his death in May 20,1506.Although he may have explored and discovered the new world,he died thinking he discovered a route to Asia.
