  • Settlers who lived in West Africa had many different ways of life, some settlers worked as farmers while others were traders in the city. In the late 1400s, Europeans started traveling to West Africa to trade, they brought weapons and other tradable items with them. Many leaders chose to sell slaves for weapons and other goods.

  • Starting in the late 1400s, enslaving Africans was becoming more common to settlers in different parts of the world. Europe was able to become more powerful by using its labor to strengthen the control of its colonies. The traders would capture the slaves by chaining them and forced to travel.
  • I'll trade this for one of your slaves. 
  • Most settlers counted on slaves for growing crops, and hunting so the settlers could survive. Slaves could become successful workers, some owners of slaves would pay the slaves. Slaves had mixed opinions about their slavery. Owners would treat the slaves badly but some slaves thought the treatment was worth it because they enjoyed the riches.
  • The Africans were captured, they were enslaved as servants or workers. Europeans believed Africans weren't fully human, and Africans were meant to be slaves. The slaves were being treated awfully, the slaves were traded in other countries for salt, weapons and other goods. The slaves were eventually forced on to ships.
  •  Enslaved Africans had a very difficult time living through the harsh conditions on the ships they were forced on to. The slaves were crossing the Atlantic ocean, the slaves arrived in North America. They were auctioned to new owners. Africans had trouble surviving as slaves serving, working, and traveling under harsh rules and conditions.
  • On the ships, slaves attempted to kill themselves by jumping overboard. Captains of the ship realized the less slaves they had the less money. They kept the slaves from attempting suicide, if a slave jumped into the ocean, captains would swim in the ocean to get the slaves. To prevent other slaves from trying too, captains would whip the slaves to scare others not to do it too.
