  • The 3rd step in cellular respiration is the Citric Acid Cycle, or also known as the Krebs cycle.
  • The Krebs cycle is a series of 8 reactions, each of which have it's own catalyst enzyme. These reactions occur in the matrix of the mitochondria. The result is the oxidation of acetyl groups into CO2, with the synthesize of 1 ATP, 3 NADH, and 1 FADH2.
  • At the end of the cycle all of the carbon atoms from the original glucose molecule have been converted into CO2. Then, the CoA that carried the acetyl group to the cycle is released and can start the process all over with a new acetyl group.
  • As a result of the citric acid cycle, most of the energy that was released was captured during the formation of the 2 molecules mentioned before: NADH and FADH2.
  • The final step in cellular respiration is the Electron Transport Chain, and it occurs in the inner membrane of the mitochondrion.
  • Hmm.....Kinda sounds like Phys-Ed class and how we our teacher makes us do exercises that'll drain our energy....
  • Because the NADH and FADH2 molecules captured most of the released energy, it is now the electron transport chain's job to extract the potential energy stored in them to make available for the synthesis of more ATP.
  • Each protein complex is a stronger oxidizer than the one before it, so electrons release energy each time they move from one complex to another. This results in the electrons being fully extracted from the NADH and FADH2 molecules. Think of it as someone wringing out a wet towel!
  • Electrons are transferred from NADH and FADH2 to O2. There are 4 protein complexes in the inner membrane, and electrons flow from one to another with the help of electron shuttles (UQ+cyt C).
  • See? What did I tell ya? Piece of cake. C'mon, let's go eat some pizza before it gets cold.
  • And that brings us to the end of the cellular respiration son.
  • WOW! Thanks dad I understand now!!
