1844James K Polk wins the presidency
Polk's platform was based on the goal of annexing Texas
Abolitionists opposed annexation as they feared that adding Texas would squash the chances of ever abolishing slavery
Americans quarell over whether to annex Texas or not.
Others favored annexation because it meant a potential war with Mexico which the US would most likely win and then could acquire more of Mexcio's land
1845Texas and the US Congress vote to annex Texas and Texas becomes the 28th state
After his offer of 30 million dollars to buy Texas was rejected, Polk sent US troops to Texas to provoke war
On April 25, 1846, Mexico fired at US troops. Polk now felt that declaring war was justified as he stated "Mexico has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon American soil"
May 11, 1846Polk sends a request the order for war to Congress
The next day, the senate votes to authorize Polk's declaration of war with Mexico.
