its poison....
"DID YOU DO SOMETHING TO THE SOUP?"
The 17th century still included or more on supported arranged marriages. Where in most cases, women even of high aristocracy in them are to be abused and beaten by their husbands. While the men do not get or recieve consequences for them. So naturally, the people who weren’t in those situations, felt sympathy for them. Giulia was one of those people.
Her make-up shop rose to fame among the ladies of her town, but not for the reason you think. Giulia in fact sold a poison disguised as one of her make-up products, called “Aqua Tofana” which contained enough arsenic to kill without leaving a trace. As it was colorless and tasteless it had helped many women of arranged marriages to successfully murder their husbands. Killing over 600 men in the span of 50 years.
Alas, not every good thing lasts. Giulia’s career ended in a blink of an eye, just because one of her new clients couldn’t keep the secret and confessed in the middle of her attempt to murder her husband. As the husband had been angered, he headed to the authorities and told them about Giulia Tofana’s doings. Then sooner or later, word spread out.
In an attempt to escape, Giulia fled to a different location in hopes the authorities wouldn’t find her. Yet despite her efforts, she was still caught. In the end, Giulia Tofana, along with her daughter and employees who helped her with Aqua Tofana was executed.
