The family listens to news of the war on the radio and men from the town have been killed overseas. It has been a little over 20 years since WWI. Toby fought in WWI as a young.

- The story takes place in Wolf Hollow, Pennsylvania, a rural town with rolling hills and farms. Annabelle's grandfather says it used to be overrun with wolves until local farmers corralled them in a pit and shot them. Annabelle lives on her family's farm.
