THE LONE GUARD
Atticus takes a long extension cord and a light bulb to the Maycomb jail to sit out front and read his newspaper. He is guarding Tom Robinson, knowing that a mob might arrive before the trial begins. Jem, Scout, and Dill sneak out of their house and watch him from a distance to make sure nothing bad happens.

THE MOB ARRIVE
Four cars pull up to the jail, and a group of men gets out to demand that Atticus step aside so they can get to Tom Robinson. Despite the threat of violence, Atticus remains calm and refuses to move from the door. Suddenly, Scout runs into the middle of the circle, followed by Jem and Dill, which shocks both Atticus and the angry men.

THE POWER OF A CHILD
Scout recognizes Mr. Cunningham in the crowd and begins talking to him about his son, Walter. Her innocent, friendly conversation makes Mr. Cunningham feel ashamed of his violent intentions by reminding him of his own humanity and his ties to the Finch family. He eventually tells the men to clear out, and the mob leaves without harming anyone.
