  • Early LifePerrot immigrated to Canada when he was a boy. He learned the Native American language and culture from priests. He entered the fur trade in 1663, working in the Great Lakes area. In 1668, he was among the first French traders who worked with the Native American Tribes around Green Bay.

  • Life's WorkIn 1670, Governor Frontenac sent Perrot on a journey as an interpreter and claimed the Upper Mississippi area for France in June 1671. Nicolas returned to Canada in the fall and married Madeleine Raclot. For the next 12 years, he worked on his land and did some fur trading. He earned a fur trading license in 1674.

  • Later YearsIn 1683, the governor told Perrot to go to the Great Lakes area to trade fur with the Native Americans. In 1685, Perrot became commander of the Green Bay region, traveled the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers, and built Fort St. Nicolas. In 1686, he built Fort St. Antoine and started trading with the Sioux. In 1689, he claimed the upper Mississippi.

Perrot continued to work among the western tribes until 1696 when all his trading licenses were taken away. He died on August 13, 1717, at the age of 74. He was buried in his church of Quebec. Perrot State Park in Wisconsin is named after him.
