AF Chapter 1

In Chapter 1 of Animal Farm all of the animals enter the barn in order of importance. They have come to listen to Old Major's Dream. Old Major is a 12 year old show pig who is respected by all - evidenced by their willingness to give up an hour of sleep to listen to him. Old Major sits on a platform above all the others. All the animals listen intently as he tells of his dream. Chapter 1 focuses on introducing the animals and giving background information for the story to come.

Quote 1:"First came the three dogs, Bluebell, Jessie, and Pincher, and then the pigs, who settled down in the straw immediately in front of the platform. The hens perched themselves on the window-sills, the pigeons fluttered up to the rafters, the sheep and cows lay down behind the pigs and began to chew the cud." (4) All the animals respected Old Major and came when called upon to listen to his dream.Quote 2:"Comrades, you have heard already about the strange dream that I had last night. But I will come to the dream later. ..I shall be with you for many months longer, and before I die, I feel it my duty to pass on to you such wisdom as I have acquired" (6). Old Major is addressing the assembled animals. He is trying to rally them to rebel against Mr. Jones.
