  • Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia in 1919, the youngest of five children. When Jackie was sixteen months old, his family moved to Los Angeles, California.

  • After playing basketball, football, golf and tennis at UCLA, Jackie was drafted into the US Army. Here he met a soldier who played baseball in the Negro Leagues. 
  • In 1944, Jackie left the army with an honorable discharge and played in the Negro Leagues for the Kansas City Monarchs.

  • In the Negro Leagues, life on the road was rough. Teams never stayed in the same city for more than a day and in some places there were no black hotels so players had to sleep on the bus or outside in the ballpark.
  • In 1945, Jackie was recruited by Branch Rickey, President of the Brooklyn Dodgers, to play on their Minor League team the Montreal Royals.
  • On February 10th, 1946, Jackie married Rachel Isum. A few weeks later, the newlyweds left for spring training in Daytona Beach, Florida.
  • People came from all over to see Jackie play. The stadium was so full some fans had to be turned away.

  • Being a black baseball player was not easy. One time in Syracuse, New York, a player on the other team threw a black cat onto the field and said it was Jackie's cousin.

  • On April 10, 1947, Jackie became a Dodger and was the first black player on a major league baseball team. In 1949 he was named MVP of the national league.
  • The Brooklyn Dodgers won their first World Series in 1955. 
  • Jackie was voted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962 and he died on October 24, 1972.
