- we are introduced to Santiago, a shepherd, who is asleep in an abandoned church under a large sycamore tree in a small Spanish town. he has a dream about something (we don't know what it is about) that bothers him.
- climax
- Santiago goes to a dream interpreter to talk about his unsettling dream. after hearing his dream, the gypsy tells him she wants 10% of the treasure when he finds it. he is annoyed and thinks she is a scam so he leaves. shortly after, he is approached by an older man who keeps asking him questions. he tells Santiago about something called a "personal legend" which is basically your fate and desires for your life. Santiago is left with an uneasy feeling and wants to know what his personal legend is.
- falling action
- Santiago is on his way to Egypt to find his treasure that the old man named Melchizedek confirmed existed. along the way, Santiago hopes to discover his personal legend and find out more about himself and what to do with his life.
- resolution
- after a long series of obstacles and meeting new people, Santiago meets the alchemist who can take him to the pyramids to find the treasure. on their way there, they are taken hostage by the military because they were accused of being spies. the people will only let them go if Santiago can transform himself into the wind.
- when Santiago finally arrives at the pyramids, he realizes that the treasure isn't there. it was never in Egypt. the treasure is back in Spain in the abandoned church where he started off his journey.
- Santiago begins his journey back home to find the treasure. he goes and finds the gypsy to give her the 10% of the treasure as he promised. he also met a woman named Fatima on the journey to Egypt and he goes and marries her. he feels accomplished and he has figured out his personal legend.
