In 490 B.C., the Persians landed their ships of 25,000 men on a plain called Marathon. 10,00 Athenians met the Persians when they arrived, they were in the phalanx position and defended their city furiously despite how outnumbered they were. It turned out that the Persians were not trained for this type of land battle and had light armor which gave the Athenians enough of an advantage to win the battle.
In 480 B.C., Xerxes, the son of Darius the Great, invaded Athens as an act of revenge. His army came to a narrow pass in Thermopylae. The Greeks (Athenians and Spartans) blocked his army from passing but when Xerxes' army was notified of a passage around the mountain the Spartans sacrificed their lives by holding them off while the Athenians retreated back to the city.
During the battle, Themistocles (an Athenian leader) convinced the Athenians to evacuate the city and fight at sea in a narrow channel around the island of Salamis. The Persians were given a fake tip that the Athenians fled there when in reality it was a trick. The Persian's large ships couldn't easily turn in the channel and were taken down.
