  • Sir, I will give you Toto for a sum of five rupees
  • I wonder what grandfather would say and do now...
  • H e's clever .Given time he could have tied the torn pieces of your blazer into a rope and made this escape from the window.
  • The narrator's grandfather bought toto who was a pretty monkey from the tonga driver for a sum of five rupees as he thought that Toto looked out of place and will be happy in his private zoo.
  • Sir you are carrying a dog with you so you will also have to pay an extra three rupees fare for the dog/
  • L think you have misunderstood , he is not a dog............Okay fine here are your three rupees fare for the animal you consider as a dog.
  • Toto's presence was kept a secret from the narrator's grandmother so Toto was kept in a little closet opening into the narrator's room and tied to a peg fastened to the wall but he managed to escape and all the narrator and his grandfather found were a blazer into shreds, the peg wrenched from its socket and the wall stood as naked bricks and plaster.
  • Toto's presence in the house was still a secret so he was shifted into a big cage in the servent's headquarters where the narrator's grandfather's pets which were a tortoise, a pair of rabbits, a tame squirrel, and the narrator's goat lived sociably together but Toto didn't let them sleep at night.
  • The narrator's grandfather had to leave for Dehra Dun to collect his pension in Saharanpur and the narrator couldn't travel along with him. Toto was put in a big black canvas kit bag in which Toto stayed till Saharanpur but while the narrator's grandfather was producing a ticket toto poked his head out of the bag giving the ticket collecter a shock.and charged 3 rupees fare for toto as he though t him as a dog.
  • Toto was finally accepted by the narrator's grandmother and given a comfortable home in the stable along with a donkey called Nana. At night the narrator's grandfather came to check on Toto but to his surprise, he saw that Toto had fastened on to her long ears with his sharp little teeth. Toto and nana never became friends.
  • Toto loved bathing with warm water on cold winter evenings. One day a large kettle of water was left on fire to boil, Toto finding it hot enough to bath . he was already half boiled when the narrator's grandmother came to his rescue.
