Jude finds the courage to talk to Stella outside the theater, "My mama-" Jude took a breath. "My mama's name is Desiree Vignes" (Bennet 278) This conversation leads to old memories about their family's past, in addition to Stella's secret to pass as a white woman. This changes the dynamic of the story because this forces Stella in a weird spot having to chose between her twin sister or her new life as a white woman.

Desiree left Mallard at 16 and unfortunately she could not escape her past having come back to Mallard, "Lou spotted Desiree Vignes walking along Patridge road carrying a leather suitcase" (Bennet 1). Despite Desiree's efforts to leave Mallard and start a new life, she finds herself constantly haunted by memories of her adolescent years that lead to her disappearance all those years ago.
