- Fort Sumter would test the two sides' willingness to engage in battle. Lincoln sent F.W. Pickens a note saying that ships would be arriving at the fort. Pickens relayed the note to Jefferson Davis, Davis replied that the fort was not to be resupplied. As the ships approached \, Confederate general P.G.T. Beauregard ordered his troops to open fire on Fort Sumter. After 40 hours, the fort was surrendered by Robert Anderson.
