The militia had surrounded any possible escape routes. John Brown and the nine people he had captured were outnumbered and they had surrendered.

John Brown had been captured by Colonel Robert E. Lee. He had been found guilty of treason. He was then executed by being hung.
Only a few of Browns men had escaped, most were killed but if not they were being sheltered in the North with formal abolitionists.
