- Your kind of American behaviour is not allowed in this household, Maya! And Nurzhan, you can't get suspended here and there!!
- This short story is about a girl, Maya, who comes from Kazakhstan all the way to the United States. In this story, you can feel on how life is like as an immigrant. The culture shocks coming from this story is very huge, and it could be relatable for a person coming from an immigrant family.
- Climax
- MAYA!!! Dad said you can go to the spring fling! He signed the form himself, you can go, you can go!!
- Maya and her family immigrates to the United States after they saw the dating magazine. They had influence on that magazine that there would be a better life in the United States, so they immigrated there. Maya would begin to face conflicts which relate to her as an immigrant.
- Falling Action
- Maya is called down to the office because Nurzhan was suspended for fighting Ossie, but Maya sugarcoats Nurzhan's actions. Later on, Maya is seen by her dad that she was in Daniel's arms, and she gets into huge trouble for it, resulting in her mother ignoring her, and her father enraged at her.
- Resolution
- Nurzhan repays Maya for the deed she did earlier and decides to plead his father to let Maya go to the dance. Maya's father eventually gives in and let's her go to the dance, even though dancing with a boy was a wrong doing in Kazkhstan. Maya is in shock and finds it hard to believe.
- No way...
- Maya's mother gives her a bracelet she used to have when she was 16. It was given to her when she had her first dance. Even though it was really special, it was given down to Maya through tradition, even though she wasn't the exact age. Maya decides to take it and wear it with her to the dance.
- Maya finally gets to attend the dance she thought she couldn't attend. She is here to babysit her brother, but he is happy about his sisters' gain, so he hides himself from attention. Maya has a great time with the dance with Daniel. Later that night, she reflects on the people most special to her, then coming across Nurzhan, her favorite chaperone.
