In this scene, Scout is narrating how slowly and how long her schooling for the first grade went by, and how tiring and unrelenting it seemed, with her not being able to learn anything.
"The remainder of my school days were no more auspicious than the first"(Lee, 32).
"Some tinfoil was sticking in a knot-hole just above my eye level, winking at me in the afternoon sun" (Lee, 33).
In this scene, Scout is on her way home from school. She passes the Radley house, where she finds gum in the knot-hole of a tree. She takes it out, and proceeds to eat it.
""I know what we are going to play," he announced. "Something new, something different." "What?" asked Dill. "Boo Radley"(Lee, 38).
Jem gets home and scolds Scout for eating something she found, as well as tells her off for going near the Radley house. He also makes her spit out the gum that she found when he realizes where its from.
"Don't you know you're not supposed to even touch the trees over there? You'll get killed if you do!" (Lee, 33).
""India- heads," he said. "Nineteen-six and Scout, one of 'em's nineteen-hundred. These are real old" (Lee, 34).
On the walk home from their last day of school, Jem and Scout find something new in the tree that Scout found gum in. It is two Indian-heads. They debate keeping them, as it could be someone's hiding place, but decide to keep them until school starts so they can ask around to see if they belong to anyone.
Jem and Scout are reunited with Dill, who came from Mississippi to Maycomb for the summer. He baffles them with tales about how he rode the train by himself, ate at a diner, and took a cab. He tells them lots of tall tales about how he helped the engineer and more. However, things quickly go awry when the tire swing they were using to play on flies into the Radley's yard.
""I helped the engineer for a while," said Dill, yawning" (Lee, 36).
After the playing on the tire swing gets ruined when it breaks and goes into the Radley's yard, Jem suggests a new game: "Boo Radley", where each of them pretends to be a member of the Radley family, and they act out their parts. Atticus scolds them, and they tell him that it has nothing to do with the Radley's when he asks.
