- The Ngai Tai tribe came from the people of Tainui and Te Kawerau-a-maki. These people lived in a forest in Waitakere. The controlled land as far as the land Kaipara, to mahurangi and down to Takapuna

- There was also a tribe called the Ngati Te Ata Tribe this tribe was based around the south of Manukua at Waiuku. The other tribe was the Ngtai Paoa a Hauraki tribe which was based around the Thames estuary
- In 1821, The Ngapuhi tribe leader Hongi Hika attacked the Tamaki tribes. They killed hundreds of people and repeated killing people at Te Totara.In 1825 Ngapuhi attacked Ngaati Whatua

- From the 1600s to the 1750s The Tamaki Tribes formed many houses along the volcanic cones., building villages. At the peak of there population there were more than tens of thousands of people there. This was pre European times
- In the early 18th centerany the Ngati Poao tribe started to edge there way into the haurki golf and as far north as Mahurangi. Between the 1740-1750s Ngati Whatua o Kaipara moved south and invaded the isthmus killing there cheif of wai-o-hua, They secured there dominance of the isthmus by connecting with the Nga Oho, descendants of the Wai-0-hua. A peiord of coutious peace in which Ngai Paoa's conflict with the Ngapuhi tribes in the north Made the Tamaki tribes valuable to attack
- Even though all of these attacks happened Tamaki Makaurua was a great place for resources for early Maori settlers. With all the place they could get there food like the oceans full of shark and fish for them to eat. As well as having a lot of space to grow their kumara and yams. They also had fertile soil on the Howick peninsula for all of these vegetables to grow
