  • What effect do they have on others?
  • After meeting Stella at Kennedy’s play, Jude thinks about telling her mother what happened but eventually decides not to, “Her mother would never forget Stella. She would stare into the mirror for the rest of her life, reminded of her loss. But Jude wouldn’t add to her grief” (Bennett 240). Words like “grief” and “her loss”, induce sympathy in the reader because they allow the reader to feel the mourning and loneliness that Desiree does. Jude has an impact on Stella because Stella starts to reflect on her relationship with Desiree.

  • After school when Jude is still young, she comes home and asks Desiree about a racist encounter she had, “Jude asked her mother what a tar baby was. ‘Just an old story,’ she said. ‘Why?’ ‘A boy called me that today.’ Her mother slowly dried her hands on the towel, then knelt in front of her. ‘He just wants to get a rise out of you” (Bennett 85). Jude was darker than others so when she came home talking about the racism she faced. Her looks constantly affected her self-confidence during her childhood because she stood out.

  • What kind of person is she?
  • Jude is a very accepting and loving person. She accepted that Reese was transgender and helped him along his journey and cared for him. "You should take that thing off,' she said. 'If it hurts you. You don't have to wear it here. I don't care what you look like" (Bennett 132). Jude reassures him that it's alright to be himself around her. This quote shows how she cares for people around her and what they're going through.
