- The woman who runs the store offers them food and asks them to pose for a picture.
- "Before you go,won't you at least sit for a pose?"
- The woman turn out to be the monster Medusa, and tried to turn them into stone.
- Percy is able to decapitate Medusa with his sword without looking at her directly.
- "Please,dears," Aunty Em pleaded. "I so rarely get to be with children. Before you go,won't you at least sit for a pose?" (p.177)
- "I could see Aunty Em's reflection in the orange glass; her headdress was gone, revealing her face as a shimmering pale circle. Her hair was moving, writhing like serpents." (p.179)
- "I slashed up with my sword, heard a sickening shlock! then a hiss like wind rushing out of a cavern-- the sound of a monster disintegrating." (p.183)
