Once upon a time in 1789 the king Louis XVI had a financial crisis because of a series of famines throughout the country. This issue was caused because of taxes not being paid So Louis XVI called a meeting of the advisory board but nothing was solved! So some members of the Estates General got fed up and created a committee called the National Assembly. The goal was to create a constitutional monarchy.

The National Assembly created a preamble to their new constitution called DORMAC, which was modeled after the declaration of independence. A new French constitution ratified in 1791 called the Moderate constitution established a three branch government which guaranteed freedom of speech and religion. Some people like Olympe De Gouges didn't think it was liberal enough and was mad that the DORMAC didn't include rights for woman so she wrote the Declaration of rights, of woman in response.
Towards the end of 1791, the Radicals within the National Assembly began to outnumber those who supported Moderate Constitution. By 1793 France had declared war on Austria, Prussia, Spain, Great Britain, and the Netherlands.
