- Hey Dad, are Christians and Buddhists the same?

- Christians believe that God created the Earth and everyone and everything in it. They believe that there is one God consisting of 3 people: The Father, Son and Holy Spirit

- Buddhists do not follow a god. They follow the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, the awakened one.

- Jesus Christ was born about 2000 years ago in present day Israel. He grew up in the Jewish faith. Jesus represents the person that all Christians must strive to be. He taught about love and fellowship.

- Siddhartha Guatama was born around 500 BCE in present day Nepal. He was born into a royal family and grew in an isolated way. He believed that people should strive to be free of ignorance and cravings and that people who were, were enlightened.

- Christians believe that Jesus is the son of God. They are taught that he performed many miracles and that he was crucified, died and then rose from the dead 3 days later.

- Buddhists believe that nothing in the world is perfect and that Buddha found enlightenment or Nirvana. They believe that you can only reach Nirvana when you find the answer too why the world is not perfect.

- The teachings of Jesus are documented in the Bible which is divided into the old and new testaments. There are many different versions of the Bible based on the specific Christian religions. Parts of the old testament are sacred to Jews and Muslims too.

- Buddha’s teachings are documented in the Tripitaka. It is written in Pali and is a very long text broken into 3 baskets of wisdom: The Discipline Basket, The Discourse Basket and The Doctrine Basket

- Christians typically worship in Churches. They are often built in the shape of a cross with an altar facing east towards the rising sun. Worship involved praising God in music, speech, reading and reciting of prayersIn their homes, christians often have crosses or pictures of Jesus that they pray in front of.

- When Buddhists worship, they typically sit on the floor, barefoot and facing an image of Buddah. They listen to monks chanting and praying.In their home Buddhists often have a shrine with a statue of Buddha, candles and incense.

- The two main events celebrated by Christians are Christmas and Easter.Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus and happens every year on December 25.Easter commemorates the death of Jesus and celebrates his rising from the dead. It it a lunar holiday and occurs between mid-March and mid-April every year.

- Wesak is the biggest Buddhist holiday and occurs in May. It celebrates the birth and death of Buddha.Other holidays also commemorate Buddha and his teachings. They are based on the lunar calendar so their dates vary from year to year, country by country and sect by sect.
