There are several steps to the election. First, the existing government has to be dissolved, usually when the Governor General issues the order. Then, candidates for the election are chosen, usually the leaders of political parties.
Then, for the next 31-74 days, candidates run their campaign, promoting their platform. The next step is voting, where citizen over 18 can vote for a candidate. After counting the results, the new or recurring government takes office.
