The Roman Catholics slowly drifted apart because of language. The Romans spoke Latin. Rome also believed that the pope should have authority over the partriarch. The pope was the religious leader of the western church. They believe the pope is infallible in matters of doctrine. Roman Catholics emphasized the unity of the Holy Trinity while the Eastern Orthodox emphasized the individuality of the Holy Trinity.
The Eastern Orthodox started to drift apart because of the different languages they spoke. They spoke Greek, while the Roman Catholics spoke Latin. The nominal head of Eastern Orthodox Churches is the Patriarch of Constantinople. They believed God revealed himself in Jesus Christ and the he was reincarnated after three days.
As of now, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox are still two of the biggest denominations of Christianity.
