The Sedition Act made it illegal to speak or publish criticism of the government. federalists thought it would protect order during crisis. Many Americans did not like the Sedition Act because it violated the first amendment.

The federalist era comes to an end
After 1800 the federalist party slowly declined and federalist won less seats in Congress. The party greatly weakened after Alexander Hamilton, the party's leader died in a dual with Aaron Burr. Despite its early decline the federalist party helped to shape the new nation and most Democratic Republican presidents kept most of Hamilton's economic programs.
