- Compost needs a mixture of nitrogen-rich organic materials. Organic means anything that once was alive.
- That means you need fruit and vegetable peelings or scraps, garden clippings, and leaves. These are called green materials.
- Every pile needs the green materials, but if all you have is green stuff, your pile can turn stinky. That would not be good for your compost, and you do not want that to happen.
- Nitrogen-poor, carbon-rich materials such as dry brown leaves, woody twigs, paper, and straw are called brown materials.
- Wow! Monica, I never knew you could use things like food scraps in your compost. I have learned a lot!
- Yep, but there are some things as well that can’t be composted.
