- Turtle, an 11-year-old girl, moves to Key West, Florida from Georgia during the Great Depression. Due to her rough upbringing, she has a negative outlook on life and relationship with others. It is hard for her to socialize. After experiencing kindness from others, she eventually changes her outlook and realizes her family supports and loves her and finds belonging.

- Turtle was born and lived during the Great Depression which impacted her personality. She had a negative perception of the world, and life in general. Her mother, although trying her best, constantly chose the wrong men to share her life with. She sent Turtle away to live with her Aunt and cousins in Key West, FL in hopes of a better life.

- Turtle initially struggled to fit in with her peers in Key West. She struggles to make relationships with her family but finding a treasure map leads to an adventure with her cousins. They knew to go to the Island because they found a map in Nana Philli’s piano and were looking for treasure.

- Turtle and her cousins were stranded on the Island whilesearching for treasure. One of Turtle’s cousins forgot to put the anchor down.The boat drifted away during a hurricane and they got stuck on the island. Thisleads to a false happy ending because her mother’s husband stole the treasure.

- Falling Action
- Turtle’s mother and husband arrive in Key West promising Turtle the perfect life. Just as they are about to leave, the husband, steals the money and runs off to Cuba.

- Resolution
- Turtle realizes that her true home and loving family, Auntie Mini and cousins are in Key West and the fact that relationship versus money are the true meaning of happiness.
