S'right. It's a shell! I seen one like that before. On someone's back wall. A conch he called it. He used to blow it and then his mum would come. It's ever so valuable.
On a beach, a fair-haired boy lowers himself down some rocks toward a lagoon. While at the lagoon, he meets another boy who is chubby, intellectual, and wears thick glasses. The fair-haired boy introduces himself as Ralph, while the chubby boy introduces himself as Piggy. Their conversation reveals that a transport plane carrying English boys was shot down over the ocean during a war.
As Ralph and Piggy look around the beach, they wonder what happened to the other boys from the plane. The two find a large, cream-colored conch shell, which Piggy realizes can be used as a trumpet. In order to find the other boys, he convinces Ralph to blow through the shell. Boys begin to gather on the beach after hearing the blast from the shell.
Boys straggle onto the beach summoned by the sound of the shell. Their oldest is around twelve; their youngest is around six. An older boy named Jack leads a boys' choir dressed in black gowns. Jack snaps at them, and they march in two parallel lines to the beach. Piggy is taunted and mocked by the boys for his appearance and nickname.
In order to elect a leader, the boys vote. Jack is voted for by the choirboys, but Ralph is voted for by all the other boys. Jack clearly wants the position, but Ralph wins the vote. Jack is asked to lead the band of boys by the choir in order to placate Ralph. To explore the island, Ralph chooses Jack and a choir member named Simon, ignoring Piggy's whining requests to be picked for the expedition. Leaving the meeting place, the three explorers travel across the island.
In the jungle, the boys play together and form a bond as they look forward to exploring the island. Eventually, they reach the edge of the jungle, where high, sharp rocks jut toward steep mountains. They climb up the steep hillside. On the peak, they can see that they are on an island without any signs of civilization. It is a stunning view, and Ralph feels as if he has discovered a whole new world.
On their way back toward the beach, they discover a wild pig caught in a tangle of vines. Jack, the newly appointed hunter, draws his knife and steps in, but he hesitates, unable to kill it. Jack vows not to flinch the next time he kills, and the pig runs away. Through dense jungle, the three boys eventually emerge near a group of boys waiting for them on the beach.
