King Henry desperately tried to end his ex-communication. Without the support of his subjects, he had a small chance of ending his excommunication. He had no power and was desperate.
NOOOOOOOO!!
Henry went to Italy to the Pope's Castle to ask for forgiveness. Henry waited outside of the pope's house in the snow for three days. Finally, Pope Gregory forgave King Henry and ended his excommunication from the church.
Popes and Monarchs came to an agreement. This agreement was called the Concordat of Worms. It gave the church the sole authority to appoint bishops and also allowed emperors to give fiefs or grants of land.
Despite this agreement, Pope's and Monarch's conflicts did not end. Herny eventually marched his army to Rome and forced the Pope from the city. It was clear that the disagreement between Popes and Monarchs could never be settled.
