Marshall decided to chastise Madison, but pointed out he cannot punish him because the writs of mandamus said "we command". The Supreme Court's power was limited, they were only to interpret. This set a great example for many to follow.

You can't do that. The Constitution says that if you have been convicted, you have the right to remain silent.
This case also established Judicial Review. The power to invalidate a law, act, or action made by the government, if it is deemed unconstitutional.
