The first scene is when Giles Corey was pressed to death because he refused to speak. Danforth wanted him to give up names of other "witches", and then he would be "free". The second scene is a courtroom during the Red Scare when people who were accused of being communists were given the opportunity to name other communists and thus be free. The Crucible is an allegory because both scenes describe what it's like when the government abandon reason and justice. In both situations, neither man has a honest and ethical way out of punishment. In this way, Arthur Miller warns people to avoid this practice.
