Feudalism
A social system during Medieval Europe in which people worked and fought for nobles who gave them land and protection.

Bishop
The bishop or pope was the top church leader. In many parts of Europe the church was very powerful which made the bishop powerful as well.

Monarch
It's great being rich and in power
The monarch was the ruler of all the land and the richest person in the hierarchy. Monarchs would usually split the land he owned among barons and in return the barons pledged their loyalty to the king.

Nobles
Nobles owned large areas of land called fiefs. They reported everything to the king and were very powerful. They maintained an army that served the king, but if they didn't have an army they paid a tax to the king.

Knights
I guess I'll just guard the castle gates
The knights were the king's army and fought for him. They were usually called into battle whenever one would start.

Peasants
It's hard work out in the fields
Most people in the Middle Ages were peasants. Some were free and had their own businesses, but most worked the land for whoever owned it.
