Rama, who was a great warrior, was married to his beloved wife Sita. Rama was meant to be the next heir on the throne but his stepmother banished him to the forest as she wanted her son to be on the throne. Sita went with Rama as she didn’t want him to go without her.
Rama and Sita live in the forest and found an ideal refuge to live during their banishment. They enjoyed the quietness of the forest, however all this changed. One day, the ruthless demon, Ravana, with 20 arms and 10 heads, noticed Sita and admired her beauty a lot that she should belong to him. He decided to kidnap her and make her his wife.
One day, Rama and Sita were walking in the woods and noticed a beautiful golden deer. Sita begged Rama to catch it for her, but he was worried if this was a trick so he cleverly put a magic circle around Sita in order to make sure she was safe, while Rama went to catch the deer.
While Rama was catching the deer, Sita was alone and this was an ideal advantage for Ravana to kidnap her so he transformed into a poor man leading Sita out of the magic circle to help. Consequently, Ravana snatched Sita away into his chariot pulled by winged demons to Lakha. Despite her terror, Sita left a trail of her jewellery for Rama to save her.
Rama went to see Hanuman, the monkey king, to help find Sita. He led Rama to the monkey city where bears, monkeys and numerous other animals gathered from all over the world to find Sita. Hanuman found the island where Sita was, so all the animals began to help to make a bridge out of rocks. They fought a long battle against the demons and Rama luckily shot Ravana with his special bow and he fell dead instantly.
The world rejoiced as the evil demon, Ravana, had been defeated and that Rama and Sita's 14 years of exile had been completed. To celebrate their homecoming people decorated their houses with colours and as night fell the people placed brightly lit candles to guide Sita and Rama home. This is why Diwali is celebrated.
